Everyone can connect to motherhood even if it’s just through gratitude and celebration for life today. Though Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate and to have gratitude, it’s also a day that comes with a natural source of pain and burden for some. Many times, as I talk to women, Mother’s Day is a reminder of that which they no longer have or never have had.
Maybe you’re grieving a little bit because your mother passed away just a little too soon and that pain is still fresh, and it is still deep. Maybe you are that woman that’s always wanted to be a mother, but infertility has plagued you. Wherever you may stand this Mother’s Day, know that you have hope and power in the presence of God as a source of comfort and strength for you. Coggins Church is also here to hold your hand.
This Mother’s Day, we will go to Proverbs 31. This scripture isn’t taught often because perhaps it can be perceived as an intimidating text. This woman is like a superwoman. Everything she’s able to do seems impossible. But the secret to superwoman is that she derives her strength and power from above. The power to live as a Proverbs 31 woman can only come from a relationship with Jesus.
Proverbs 31:10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
The word excellent in Hebrew is a militant term that means “mighty”. So today, we’ll look at three general marks of a mighty mother from Proverbs 31.
1. A mighty mother gives wise advice to her children (Proverbs 31:1-9)
Proverbs 31 woman was written by King Lemuel as he documented advice from his mother. Wisdom is the knowledge of God applied to everyday life. It’s important for mothers to pass on godly advice to her children. Mothers should encourage their children to fight for their purity. Her wisdom comes from an overflow of her relationship with God. Mothers have a depth of influence over the husband and children. Daily time with God will give you the strength, knowledge, and understanding to pour into your family. As a mother, you will always have an influence on your children. If you’ve established consistency and love over the years, your children will still turn to you for godly, wise advice.
2. A mighty mother loves her family.
A great mother makes her house a home. She makes her family her priority. She works hard, she sacrifices, she ensures meals are made and her family has what they need. So, a valuable mother should be treated and honored more than precious jewels. We should recognize that deep relationships bring more value to our lives than riches and gold. She loves and supports her husband so that he can find great success in the world.
She helps her family in every way she can. She challenges them and helps them get back on track, when she sees them miss the mark. Because of her support, her husband is “known at the gates”. This means that he has a positive influence because of the love and support of his wife. As a mother, you have much to do with your family’s future. They will believe what you say to them and what you say about them.
“Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” Proverbs 31:29
Do you tell your wife or your mother how wonderful she is? Do not let her acts of service go unnoticed. Her husband is successful, well known and confident in the community because of her love for him. She also loves her children. Children see her love through her acts of service. This mother is willing to do whatever it takes to make her household run more effectively. Whether your homes needs a hot meal, an orderly environment or a sense of laughter and joy, you know what your home needs to thrive. Consider what God wants for you to give your family for your home. A mother has a unique opportunity to pour into her children and her family every day of her life. Take every opportunity to express gratitude and love towards your mother for all she does.
3. A mighty mother is mighty in every area of her life.
You see the impact that she makes in her home, her life and in her community. She’s an entrepreneur, she is talented, she is industrious and resourceful. She helps the poor and the needy. She also takes care of herself, but her outward beauty is just a reflection of her inner beauty. The Bible says that “strength and dignity” are her clothing.
Proverbs 31: 30 sums it up as it says, “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
All that she did was an overflow of her fear and dedication for her God. This is a reminder to express our gratitude, love and respect for the mothers in our lives. They are valuable and precious to our families and our communities.
